Putting together a baby registry sounds exciting—until you realize just how many products there are to choose from!

Only recently, I started preparing for the baby shower for one of my dear friends by creating a Baby Registry. Looking through the options, I decided to focus on the things that would make everyday life with a newborn safer, easier and less stressful. These are the five essentials I would add first.

1. A Safe Place for Baby to Sleep

The first thing I would choose is a safe, comfortable sleep space, such as a bassinet, crib or portable playard.

I’d look for:

• A firm, flat mattress
• A snug fitted sheet
• Clear age and weight limits
• A size that fits comfortably beside the bed
• A design that is easy to move or store

Personally, I like the flexibility of a portable playard with a bassinet because it can be used at home, while travelling or when visiting family.

2. A Rear-Facing Infant Car Seat

A car seat would be one of my biggest priorities because it is needed from the baby’s very first trip home.

I wouldn’t leave this item open for someone else to choose. I’d add the exact model that fits my vehicle, works with my preferred stroller and feels manageable to carry.

I’d check:

• Newborn height and weight limits
• Ease of installation
• Carrier weight
• Vehicle compatibility
• Stroller compatibility

3. A Practical Stroller

It’s easy to fall in love with a stylish stroller, but I would focus on how practical it is to use every day.

I’d choose one that:

• Folds easily
• Fits inside the car
• Is not too heavy to lift
• Has useful storage underneath
• Handles the surfaces where it will be used
• Works with the chosen infant car seat

For me, an easy fold and manageable weight would matter more than lots of complicated extras.

4. A Comfortable Newborn Carrier

A baby carrier would definitely make my list. I love the idea of keeping baby close while still having both hands available.

I’d look for:

• Proper newborn head and neck support
• Adjustable straps
• Secure buckles
• Soft, breathable fabric
• Simple washing instructions
• Clear age and weight guidance

I would probably choose a straightforward newborn-friendly carrier rather than the most complicated model available.

5. A Complete Diaper-Changing Setup

Diapers may not be the most exciting registry item, but they are certainly one of the most useful.

Rather than adding only diapers, I would create a complete changing setup with:

• Diapers in several sizes
• Fragrance-free wipes
• Diaper cream
• A wipe-clean changing mat
• A portable storage caddy
• A practical diaper pail

A portable caddy would be especially helpful because it could move between the nursery, bedroom and living room.

Before adding anything, I would ask myself:

Will this make daily life with a newborn safer, easier or more organized?

My first five choices would be a safe sleep space, infant car seat, practical stroller, newborn carrier and complete diaper-changing station.

The adorable outfits and toys can still be added—but I’d make sure the everyday essentials are covered first.
